Free online eye test
We often get asked the question, “how do I know if I need glasses?”. Truth is, there’s no one size fits all approach when it comes to our vision. However, our virtual eye test is designed to offer you a little more clarity.
Have you been putting off that dreaded trip to the opticians? Our online eye test is now available to give you a better indication of your vision. It’s not an official test and you won’t be able to get a prescription here today, but our online eye test can help you identify any potential problems that you might have with your eyesight. Who knows, you might even discover you have perfect vision! Without further ado, let’s get started.
Take our online vision test
To take our online eye test, you’ll need:
- A desktop computer or laptop
- A tape measure or ruler
To get started, use your tape measure to place your screen at the required distance mentioned below. Lay your device on a flat surface at eye level and cover your left eye. You’ll want to start by reading the letters from top to bottom – it helps if you have somebody else nearby to verify your answers. Once you’ve read the letters with your right eye, you’ll want to cover this eye and repeat again using your left eye.
How do I know if I need glasses after taking the test?
Our virtual eye test is not an official medical eye exam but it can be used to identify any potential issues with your vision. If you read all of the letters clearly then you likely have good vision, however, if you have any concerns about not being able to read any of the letters in our graphic when sat at the desired distance away, book an appointment with an optician as soon as possible.
Your optician will be able to run through any concerns you might have and they’ll carry out an official eye examination – it won’t be too dissimilar from our virtual one. After your official eye examination you can get the prescription and with that you are ready to buy glasses online. Just take a photo and upload it with you order, sit back and wait for your glasses to arrive.
Preparing for a trip to the opticians
If you’re worried about a trip to the opticians for your first official eye test, you’re certainly not alone.
Here are a few tips to put your mind at ease:
- Find out where you’re going ahead of time. If you’re anxious about the trip, not knowing where you’re going can certainly contribute to any anxious feelings. We would recommend you plan your trip ahead of time, including the exact route you’re planning to take. If you’re feeling particularly anxious, a rehearsal trip is always worthwhile – or ask a friend to come along with you.
- Understand what an eye test involves. We’ve put together a guide to help you understand the process of getting your eyes tested – including what your optician will look for. The process is relatively straightforward and noninvasive.
- Note down any changes in your vision. If you’re reading our article, it’s likely you’ve noticed some changes in your vision recently. Make a note of these changes now on a notepad (or your phone) and bring them with you to the opticians. This will help you explain things much more easily on the day.
